The Traviscraper is designed to refine concave surfaces, such as Windsor chair seats after the use of a travisher. This tool is particularly effective on hardwoods, such as ash and will create a surface that requires a minimum of sanding.

The Traviscraper is made from naval brass and Delrin (a high-density engineering polymer) with an aluminium wedge.

This tool has been developed in response to the need to produce high-quality surfaces, in a quick and pleasurable manner, which need a minimum of sanding. The traviscraper is complementary to the travisher and is not designed to replace it.

The blade is set by tapping it from above with a hammer. It can be removed for sharpening by tapping the upside-down tool on the bench to release the wedge.

The blade is sharpened in the same way as a card scraper and a burr can be created on both sides of the blade allowing it to be flipped over when the first burr loses sharpness. Resharpening takes a matter of minutes and about three sharpenings should be possible between the regrinding of the edge. This latter takes just minutes. Videos will be produced shortly showing all these simple processes.

The tool is supplied with the blade sharpened on two sides. It should be useable straight out of the box, provided shipping knocks have not altered the position of the blade.

Chair Making Book

Written by James Mursell, this book was the first new book about the making and design of Windsor chairs for over 10 years. It was written with a broad readership in mind and is aimed at existing Windsor chair makers and also at those who are contemplating making their first chair.

Tool Testimonials

“This tool is phenomenal. I bought two, one for myself and another for my Windsor chairmaker instructor. Compared to the other travishers I have used, yours is very good to work with and everyone who has tried it loves it. I just ordered a second one and your two spokeshaves which I trust will be as enjoyable to use. Thanks again for making such great tools.” LG (USA) 2015
