Traviscraper and Spokescraper

These two scraper tools were developed during 2020’s lockdown and were produced in response to the need to produce better finished surfaces during chair making.

The Traviscraper is complementary to the travisher and the Spokescraper to the spokeshave. These are finishing tools and do not replace the travisher and spokeshave.

The Traviscraper is designed to work on concave surfaces, such as chair seats, and the Spokescraper on flat and convex surfaces such as the outsides of seat, spindles and steam bent parts.

Both tools will produce surfaces that require minimal sanding, even on very difficult woods.

"I have your deluxe travisher, which is excellent, and your traviscraper, which is even more excellent. I've just received your spokescraper and it's off the scale excellent. I’ve always struggled with scrapers in general but I've just tried it on a spindle I was shaping that was causing problems for my normal spokeshave. Really good on one side of the spindle but bad tearout on the opposite side. Your spokescraper was simply amazing. I've never taken so quickly to a tool. Really really fantastic. Stunning to look at also, well balanced and comfortable in the hand. Very well done."

Chair Making Courses

No previous experience is necessary to successfully complete a Windsor chair making course and yet experienced woodworkers will still be fully challenged. Individual guidance and assistance will be provided as appropriate, and every effort will be made to ensure a rewarding and enjoyable course.

Chair Making Book

Written by James Mursell, this book was the first new book about the making and design of Windsor chairs for over 10 years. It was written with a broad readership in mind and is aimed at existing Windsor chair makers and also at those who are contemplating making their first chair.

Tool Testimonials

“This tool is phenomenal. I bought two, one for myself and another for my Windsor chairmaker instructor. Compared to the other travishers I have used, yours is very good to work with and everyone who has tried it loves it. I just ordered a second one and your two spokeshaves which I trust will be as enjoyable to use. Thanks again for making such great tools.” LG (USA) 2015
