Medium spokeshave details

The body is based on traditional designs but updated to expel the shavings through the top of the body. This has the great advantage of leaving a solid back just where the tool is pushed with the thumbs. In addition the back of the blade is supported along its length reducing any tendency to chatter.

This solidly made medium spokeshave fits comfortably in the hands and is enhanced by the presence of a thick brass wear-plate in front of the blade. Under normal conditions this will never wear out and tool itself should last a lifetime. This spokeshave is ideally suited to removing wood rapidly, whether with or across the grain. Afterwards it takes only a moment to reduce the set of the blade to make fine finishing cuts.

Micro-adjustable, high carbon steel blade

The tool has a Ron Hock (high carbon steel) blade with threaded posts, which can be tightened with the knurled brass knobs on top of the tool.

Brass wear plate

Micro-adjustment of the blade can be easily made (without removing the blade) with the hex key by winding the two grub screws adjacent to the brass knobs in and out.  These two grub screws, visible between the brass knobs, are threaded all the way through the spokeshave’s body so that the bottom of each screw in contact with the top surface of the blade. Once set at the chosen position the blade is pulled up onto the grub screws with the knurled knobs.

Chair Making Courses

No previous experience is necessary to successfully complete a Windsor chair making course and yet experienced woodworkers will still be fully challenged. Individual guidance and assistance will be provided as appropriate, and every effort will be made to ensure a rewarding and enjoyable course.

Chair Making Book

Written by James Mursell, this book was the first new book about the making and design of Windsor chairs for over 10 years. It was written with a broad readership in mind and is aimed at existing Windsor chair makers and also at those who are contemplating making their first chair.

Tool Testimonials

“This tool is phenomenal. I bought two, one for myself and another for my Windsor chairmaker instructor. Compared to the other travishers I have used, yours is very good to work with and everyone who has tried it loves it. I just ordered a second one and your two spokeshaves which I trust will be as enjoyable to use. Thanks again for making such great tools.” LG (USA) 2015
