Travishers

This tool is shaped from a solid block of Hard Maple. The sculpted shape fits easily to the hand, and the curvature of the blade can create the steepest curves required in making a Windsor seat. The blade is held positively in place with two grub screws which are adjusted with an Allen key from the front of the tool.

Used after the adze and scorp, the travisher can remove wood quickly to create the final shape; but it can also produce very fine shavings, and a surface needing a minimum of scraping and sanding. This unique design is very comfortable to use. The thumbs which do most of the work press on the full-width wooden back, which is unencumbered with screws or gaps as found on alternative makes. The shavings are freely expelled through the large slot in the top of the tool.

An invaluable tool for seat-making.

The blades are individually hand forged by master blade-maker Ben Orford.
